Each year, we commemorate World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on March 24 to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic consequences of TB, and to step up efforts to end the global TB epidemic. The date marks the day in 1882 when Dr Robert Koch discovered the micro bacterium tuberculosis, the positive agent for TB. This opened the way towards diagnosing and curing TB disease.


The Programme is functional in all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, providing free of cost diagnostic & curative services. There are 192 BMUs (Basic Management Units) in Public Sector, 487 General Practitioners in private sector in 19 districts, 07 Parastatal and 07 Private hospitals and 18 NGOs enrolled with the Programme for provision of these services. For timely diagnosis of Drug Resistant TB (DR-TB) patients, 37 Gene Xpert sites are established in 24 districts of the province. 05 PMDT (Programmatic Management of Drug Resistant TB) sites working for management of DR-TB patients in Abbottabad, D.I. Khan, Mardan, Peshawar & Swat.


Bio-Safety Level-III (BSL-III) Laboratory, the first of its kind in public sector, is established at Provincial TB Reference Laboratory Peshawar for diagnosis of MDR-TB. Bio-Safety Level-II (BSL-II) Laboratories are established at DHQ Abbottabad & MMMTH D.I. Khan for follow up of DR-TB patients during their course of treatment. 07 TB/HIV sentinel sites have been established in the province to screen TB patients for HIV. 14952 TB patients screened from 2013 till date.


The Programme has registered and treated:

625946 Primary TB patients from 2002 till date & 2551 Drug Resistant TB patients have been registered.



  • TBCP in collaboration with IG Prisons has initiated screening of prisoners at all prisons of the province. 4085 prisoners have been screened till date.
  • The Programme in collaboration with Khyber Medical University (KMU) has piloted Tobacco cessation integration in TB care services in 04 districts i.e. Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mardan & Kohat.
  • Health Department has passed bill from Provincial Assembly titled Tuberculosis Notification Act 2016 for mandatory notification of TB cases on part of all health care providers to district health authorities. The Health Department has also issued a notification for regulating Over the Counter (OTC) sale of Anti TB Drugs. The Act is piloted in two districts i.e. Peshawar & Mardan.
  • 02 CAD4TB digital X-ray machines installed in District Nowshera and Swat which is one of the latest innovations in the field of radiology with CAD4TB software that detects TB suspect through scoring technique.


The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has pledged to achieve the objectives set out in the Global Plan to eliminate TB. For this purpose, adequate allocation of resources has been provided to ensure quality diagnostic and curative services to 31 million inhabitants of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. We can achieve the Global Plan of End TB Strategy targets (2030-2035) only if we put in place innovative approaches and work together.
