About PTP

TB program Khyber Pakhtunkhwa addresses exclusively TB burden in the Province, which is one of the priority public health problems in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa/ Pakistan.. TB Control Program has instituted the NTP/WHO recommended DOTS (directly observed treatment short course) strategy to overcome the problem. It is a comprehensive, community-based strategy, integrated with Primary Health Care services and other Health Programs.
TB Control Program is providing free TB care to about 25.051 million populations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and also to the inhabitants of 7Agencies and 6 FRs and the Afghan Population as well. The people of the adjoining districts are also benefited. TB control program is extended to all the inhabitants of the province through 225 diagnostic and more than 810 treatment centers. Free of cost sputum microscopy for all the patients as a diagnostic tool under TB DOTS strategy is ensured by the Program and for the follow up of TB Treatment as well. Free of cost TB medicines availability without interruption to all the patients registered with the program throughout the Province is the strength of this program.
Training of    most of the doctors, paramedics and laboratory technicians in the diagnostic centers for providing quality ensured DOTS services is the hallmark of the program. Regular monitoring and supervision of the TB Control program activities at all the tiers through trained managers (District TB Officers ) has strengthened the program and further enhanced the efforts to bring relief to poor patients. The steadily increasing Case Detection Rate of the highly infectious Bacteriological Positive TB patients (8 % in 2002 to 68% in 2012) has transformed the zeal of the program and to organize and coordinate various initiatives on a more technical manner.
Excellent treatment success rate (94% as compared to 85% target set by NTP/WHO achievement is the strength of the program. Social mobilization of the community with imparting TB awareness and communication at the gross root level is being very successful effort to identify more suspects and register more cases with the program. Innovative Research initiatives periodically implemented by the program have developed enough basis to refine action oriented interventions. Stop TB partnership is one of its kind forum at the provincial level, though at the primitive stage may show its usefulness in developing a viable partnership from policy making to implementation and community participation in ensuring efficient and effective DOTS.
Developing Coordination with other programs like HIV/AIDS, Roll Back Malaria Control Program and National Program for Family Planning and Primary Health Care (LHWs Program) has been developed and strategies formulated which can be further strengthened to improve the services.
